Personality: Kaylan has his mother's traits of being carefree and curious. Life is a fascinating puzzle for him, and he wants to figure it out - even if it means exploring every inch of Pern! He doesn't quite understand when something is supposed to be 'serious'. What's there to be upset about, after all? Life is great!
Similarly, while he has his mother's simple happy characteristics, from his father he has gotten the traits of being loyal, understanding, and above all, determined. He's not the type to run out on you, no matter what - like a canine, Kaylan'll always be there, ready to hug you and bring a smile to your face by asking if you want to play dragons with him. He never tires of pretending to be one of those magnificent creatures!
He's also a very understanding 'brat. Even though he's too young to really understand major problems, he'll always be sympathetic, hugging you and telling you it's okay as if he's the parent. When you can get him to settle down, he's a great listener. And he'll do whatever it takes to make things right - all this little weyrbrat wants is to make people happy.
Most of all, this kid is determind. Onhce he's started something, nothing short of a whole batch of bubbly pies will make him stop. Having a one-track mind nearly to the point of being obsessive-compulsive, he'll strive to finish whatever he starts - be it a delicious meatroll of an end to Thread itself!
For a 9-Turn-old 'brat, Kaylan may seem kind of immature. Mostly it is that he has retained his childish innocence, not quite grasping the seriousness of major problems whenever they come around. But don't be fooled - as easily as Kay can seem playful and blissfully unawares one moment, he could be surprisingly acute the next. Another thing that makes him mature is that while Kaylan knows perfectly well he is the son of the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, he has never once flaunted that fact, not boasted of it. Whenever hementions it, it is said without conceit, but with a surpriseing matter-of-factness.
One thing that may surprise many is that Kaylan is turning out to be surprisingly manipulative. He has figured out by now that many love him because he's so cute, and wants to make him happy - and he knows how to use that to get what he wants.

History:
Kaylan was born to Lilia of Violet Panitath and T'lyn of Onyx Mnelth. While he always wondered about his mother, who he never seemed to be able to see or talk to, he loved his father. T'lyn may have only been a young Onyxrider, but Kaylan viewed him as the very best Onyxrider in Pern. While for a few years, as he was brought up by T'lyn, he was content with his father, as he matured and saw children with their mothers, he began to ask after his. Who was she, really? Why didn't he ever see her? Why did she never come to see him? Weren't mothers supposed to do that?
All T'lyn would tell him was that Kaylan's mother was a bery good person, that she was the Weyrwoman of Hadi Weyr, and that she was very busy. Kaylan had wanted more, but for some reason, his father was touchy about the matter, so he learned o leave it alone.
As he grew, T'lyn began to teach him about dragons. Kaylan was fascinated with the creatures; they were so big and amazing. Naturally, the 'brat began to dream of having a dragon of his own one day. He would fantasize about it, and constantly talk with his father about what dragon he would get, and what his new name would be. "I'll be K'lan!" he would announce to T'lyn. "Or Kay'lan. Or Kay'an. Or..." The list never seemed to end. One thing he liked about his father was that whenever a name or color or size of dragon seemed unlikely, T'lyn told him. He knew that his father would never tell him he would have something he never could.
As he got old enough to explore the weyr, Kaylan began getting glimpses of the Weyrwoman, his mother. He only ever saw her from a distance; usually Lilia was by the feeding grounds, or in her weyr or in the Dining Hall surrounded by other riders, where Kaylan wasn't allowed. At first he tried to wave, to catch her attention, but after a while he realized that his mother just didn't seem to recognize him. Sometimes he saw her with another boy, and after pestering T'lyn, the Onyxrider told him that it was Kaylan's half-brother, Holent.
Kaylan didn't like his mother not knowing him, but he understood that it was a touchy subjeect with his father, so the curious questions that had sprouted from seeing her stopped. He made himself be content with the life he had; listening to his father, playing with other weyrbrats, talking to T'lyn's Mnelth (After a while the usually reclusive Onyx let his rider's son converse with him)...and if he ever dreamed of his mother, he never told anyone.
Then T'lyn became Weyrleader. Kaylan hadn't been allowed out into the Weyrbowl to watch the Rise, but he'd watched eagerly from a window. He saw his mother and father together, and hoped against hope that now, now, his mother would know him.
It never happened. For a while, T'lyn seemed more open about talking with his son about Kaylan's mother, and the weyrbrat learned that Lilia had had one mate before T'lyn, a Silverrider C'lir who was now the Weyrlingmaster. He learned more about Lilia's past and present. But after a year or two, T'lyn because reclusive once more, shying away from the subject. And Kaylan didn't press him.
Now, at 9 Turns old, Kaylan has gotten used to life as the Weyrleader's son. T'lyn has less time for him, but it doesn't bother the 'brat much. Only lately this season, the Onyxrider seemed to be around less than usual. At first Kaylan thought little of it, but now T'lyn seems so tressed, and he won't even mention Lilia anymore, and if Kaylan dares to bring it up, his father settles into stony silence. But Kaylan is young, and he doesn't really understand it. He's heard talk of the strange force ordering away the dragpns, but it excites him rather than scares him. He's convinced that he's going to go into the mountains and find it himself, and become a hero!
If only he knew his wish was about to come true and not in the most heroic way...
