Aivas managed to eliminate Thread for 400 years, allowing everyone to settle down a bit. Pern grew in that time, with new technologies and even larger estates and Holds. Towns sprung up, and new uses for materials came about.
Unfortunately, with society came crime rates. Rebels have already taken down the Lord Holder and his Blood in Southern Hold, choosing to anoint one of their own as leader and ignore the code of tithing to the Weyr. Murderers and thieves, bandits and highwaymen run rampant through the roads of Pern, for travel has increased and even the lowliest farmer can get to a major trade hold.
The dragon riders of Pern have become something of a police force as well as a military unit. They're in charge of settling violent debates best they can and trying to prevent violent rebellions. They also help out with transporting goods and people, for a price of Marks or goods or services. Yes, in a way, Dragon Riding has become a Craft all of its own, and a varied one at that.
But now, Aivas has reawakened. He had been revived 100 Turns ago by the Southern Weyrwoman, seeking to find a solution to a plague infecting Southern Hold. Since then, he's been monitoring the nearby areas of space for activity and aiding Crafters, as well as giving out knowledge of Terran and Pernese history.
And it seems his efforts have paid off. His plan failed; he has recently located Thread spores in the space surrounding Pern. But there's something else on the radar, something that's not Thread. It is familiar, yet strange at the same time.
